P R O T E R O initially began as a retirement project for Frank and Rosemary Baldasso. Realising the quality of the fruit their Gumeracha vineyard was producing, they decided to create the Protero label using two of Australia's finest winemakers; Paul Drogemuller and S.C. Pannell.
Frank Baldasso's vision and passion for the land has transpired into a sustainable and low carbon approach.
Protero takes its name from the Proterozoic geological epoch formed around 1 to 2 billion years ago. It is from these greatly weathered stones that the soil of our vineyard comes from.
PROTEROZOIC literally means “former life” or “the life which came first”; referring to the fact that during this tumultuous age, which stretched from 570 million years back to 2.6 billion years, the first types of multi-cellular life began to form. In contrast, the famous Kimmeridgean chalks below Chablis are 60 million years old.
Salomon Estate
Salomon Estate
SALOMON ESTATE bottles elegant Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Atop the rolling hills of the Finniss River winegrowing area the grapes ripen in an idyllic microclimate. Finniss River extends along the southeast sholder of the Adelaide Hills, part of the Fleurieu Peninsula.
SALOMON ESTATE wines mirror the unique qualities of this landscape: you can feel the midday sun in their fruits and the chilled air of the nearby Southern Ocean in their acids. These exceptional wines reflect the fruit of Australia with a European approach to winemaking.
Bert and Gertrud Salomon bridge the old and the new wine world. Harvesting twice a year they commute between Finniss River/Australia and their famous white wine estate SALOMON UNDHOF/ Austria, which they manage in the eighth generation.
Always one to make the right decisions at the right time, Bert is helped by iconic Australian winemaker Mike Farmilo, longtime friend and Penfolds chief red winemaker until 1997.
AESTATIS GSM
Aestatis is an ode to the summer on the Fleurieu Peninsula. This wine reflects the summer in the openly fruity character of the Grenache grape which dominates this Cuvee. Grenache Noir is the archetypal hot climate vine, yielding spicy and sweet grapes, complemented by the more structured Syrah with its hints of black pepper and a tiny bit of dark and gamy Mourvedre.
Barrel-aged for 18 months in 300-liter hogsheads (primarily in used French oak).
